This was a sweet story. Tanner has a lot of baggage from his past and doesn't think he'd be a good husband to anyone. Maggie is dropped into his life when she inherits the ranch that Tanner works on.
I really enjoyed Maggie and her personality. She jumped right into ranching life and was determined to learn and participate in every aspect of the ranch. My heart ached for Tanner and how he had cut himself off from relationships. He did a pretty good job of punishing himself throughout the story. This was a very emotional story and Tanner and Maggie both changed and grew so much throughout the book.

I wanted this to be a five star read, and actually thought it would be for the first three quarters of the book. Then the flow and timing just seemed to go wonky. At that point, all I could do is wade through the remainder of the story and hope for a HEA ending. Thankfully, the ending was short, but satisfying. Although an epilogue would have been nice.

This book is a very clean, sweet romance with an interesting story and likable characters. In spite of all of (hero) Tanner's problems with his past and stubborness, I liked his character, and Maggie was just lovable (but naive') from the start. The supporting characters were also likable, especially Maggie's brother Andy.
This is a simple cowboy love story. He has had a rather hard life, losing both parents he has the responsibility of his two younger brothers. Then in a passionate moment he gets his girl friend pregnant. He is under twenty, all this on his shoulders and he earns his living working on a ranch. As with most very young couples things are very hard. Then tragedy strikes.

Years later he is foreman on a big ranch, divorced, not very educated, he is determined to live out his years alone. he feels he didn't do such a good job as husband and never made it to father. He is lonely and alone. He doesn't seem to have much hope for anything else. Then his boss passes away and wills her ranch to a young schoolteacher. He is instantly attracted but knowing his background he does everything he can to keep her at a distance.

This is a good story. It gets better as it goes along. He is very shy, not use to being around women, feels he was a failure as a husband, so he comes across as not too bright. As the story goes on you come to understand him and understand where he is coming from. he is a likeable hero, just not your typical cowboy hunk!! I would definitely recommend the book. It was an interesting read.

I liked this story about a ranch foreman teaching a city girl how to run a ranch.

Tanner had been the foreman of Three Bar C for a few years when the owner passed away leaving the ranch to Maggie MacLeod. Maggie moved to the ranch from the city, knowing nothing about ranching but was determined to learn. She had been told that Tanner was going to be there to teach her. How hard could it be?

I liked the way this pair fell for each other but fought their feelings. Tanner didn't do relationships. He had been married once and never again. Maggie was his boss so she knew she shouldn't get involved with him. The reaction of these characters to each other pulled me into the story. I loved Maggie's determination and spunk to learn everything she could about ranching. But she was almost too good to be true. Tanner was a mess. He didn't talk much making it hard to know or like him.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes sweet western romances.
Robert Tanner is stubborn. He failed once at marriage and he'll never make that mistake again. He may be attracted to Maggie MacLeod, the new owner of the Three Bar C, but he won't act on it. Or will he? Maggie is kind, gentle and beautiful and she's sweet on him. Talk about a battle of wills. I love cowboys, but Tanner took some getting use to. I wanted to give him a head slap and tell him to stop. I understood his heartbreak and I was sympathetic, but you have to move forward. Maggie was good for him and tried to reach out, but he ran away. I was glad when she stood up to him. Anne McAllister did a great job. I just wasn't sure if these two would ever get together. Cowboys Don't Cry is well written, with snappy dialogue and a rugged setting. I'm looking forward to reading Luke's story.
One reviewer called this a very clean read, another reviewer praised it for the lack of any bedroom scenes. Those statements seem misleading as there is certainly a descriptive sex scene and quite a lot of talk about Tanner struggling against his physical desire for Maggie, being aroused, undressing her in his mind, heading to a bar and wet t shirt contest to look for a one night stand to relieve his pent up sexual frustration. As to the plot and characters, I enjoyed the description of cowboy life, the ranch, the land, etc. and I liked some of the secondary characters, too. Tanner's background that makes him so adverse to a relationship was believable and heartfelt but I still think it took him way too long to get over it. Not to mention it was hard to keep liking him after he kept being so rude and harsh towards Maggie. Maggie's declaration of love seemed kinda out of the blue, and I felt she was a little blind in her devotion to Tanner, given how he treated her some times. Also I felt like the book never lets us really get to know Maggie other than on the surface, maybe that is because the book is 100% in Tanner's point of view, and he avoids her for so much of the book. I guess that left me feeling like Maggie's character was a little flat. Overall, I liked the basic plot, enjoyed some of it and the author seems to have good writing skills but the rest of it just wasn't quite my cup of tea.
