Something the Cat Dragged In The Peter Shandy Mysteries Book 4 edition by Charlotte MacLeod Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Charlotte MacLeod's Peter Shandy leads the reader on an amusing chase for the villain who 'did in' a quite boring and entirely irritating retired Professor. More than likely he and most of his colleagues, including the redoubtable College President, would have let the incident pass unnoticed if it did not seem likely to cast a shadow upon their beloved university. For there was an election of importance to the University in process and nefarious forces somehow associated with the event seemed bent upon damaging public opinion with regard to its students and policies. A further murder reinforces the President's determination that Professor Shandy provide aid and comfort to the seemingly bumbling sheriff who proves to be capable of rising to the occasion under the tutelage and with the support of the academic who has, through chance, become something of a crime fighting legend on campus.
Readers of the series will have some advantage in appreciating this visit to New England but others should be able to find almost equal pleasure in the book. There is nothing here to awaken deeper sources of personal anxiety or raise momentous issues of crime and punishment. The author seeks only to entertain without recourse to often ugly and disturbing reality nor the sexuality which adorns many current mysteries. In this book she succeeds pretty well in achieving that objective.

Something the Cat Dragged In The Peter Shandy Mysteries Book 4 edition by Charlotte MacLeod Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I enjoy all of Charlotte MacLeod's books. The characters and plots are unique. This is a good small-town mystery that is a sweet read.
The solution came completely out of the blue, apparently he fell asleep then woke up with the whole thing worked out. Nothing led up to it. And again I hate the business of taking 3-4 pages to work up a case for every perfectly innocent bystander to be the guilty party when it's obvious they aren't. A waste of time and paper. I kept getting the idea I'd missed a few pages. Things didn't hang together very well.
Having never read a Peter Shandy Mystery, I was attracted by the title. I love the Midnight Louie and Mrs. Murphy Cat Mystery Series. In both cases the cat is a major part of the story line. This cat, Edmund, is seldom in the story line. Abet, without his assistance at the very beginning, the story would not have unfolded, but it did so without Edmund's further assistance. That said, it is an enthralling mystery and well played out by the characters. I had parts, but no where near all of the intricacies solved. The University President did seem vocally challenged and required Shandy's eloquent translations at times. He seemed somewhat out of character.
But I was left wanting more of Helen! It seems she was only an afterthought in this book, after having played such a major role in the last one (Rest You Merry).
It is a good mystery but I found the conspiracy a little difficult-how would you hide such a thing between so many people? And it moved a little slowly up until the last couple of chapters, then it was Bang!-it's over.
Just a lot of little things that spoiled it for me.
If I could describe the story in one word, it would be comfy. But that shouldn't detract from the twists and tangles that lead the reader through this murder mystery. It is easy to come up with five suspects right away for the dastardly deed, then as the story moves on, more suspects appear. You have to read to the end to find the answer. It is well planned out and it reveals a small corner of our world that most people don't know about.
Charlotte MacLeod's SOMETHING THE CAT DRAGGED IN has all the funny style that made her famous.
Mrs. Lomax's cat found a new toy, but she discovered it was Professor Ungely's hairpiece. She did her best to return the item, but found the Professor missing. Bent on a search and rescuse mission she discovers his body behind his clubhouse.
It isn't long before they all know his death wasn't an accident, but cold blooded murder. Peter Shandy works to save the college's reputation and discover who would want to kill a harmless old man?
A fun read.
Nash Black, author of PRELUDE OF DEATH.
These Shandy books can in no way be confused with great literature. But they don’t pretend to try. They’re pleasant little mysteries in a pleasant setting, peopled by pleasant characters. They aren’t page-turners and there’s no taut suspense to keep you up late reading past your bedtime. In fact, you’ll probably sleep like a baby after reading a chapter or two. It’s fun to return to book after book in the series to visit Balaclava and Professor Shandy. These are true cozies. Just as an aside, I was amused by a couple of typos. Cops and robbers was morphed into cops and Roberts in one place. Chief Ottermole was renamed Chief Ottenhole in another, as if Ottermole isn’t silly enough.
