Demon King High Demon Book 3 High Demon Series eBook Connie Suttle
I've loved every Blood Destiny, every Ir'indicti, and every High Demon book until this last one. Norian's behavior didnt bother me, he's a dick, has been since he was introduced in the Blood Destiny series, still not sure why Lissa keeps him around. But the behavior of Reah's mates throughout the entire book is just so unbelievable. The treatment of Reah throughout the ENTIRE book is so atrocious I almost put it down and walked away at times. Dont get me wrong I have no problem with the main characters having a tough time of it and perserving through it all, look at Lissa she one of my favorite characters but I just had such a hard time with how the character's acted in this book, everyone ranging from Kifirin to to Tory, and I think it was because the way they acted didnt make sense to me based on the way their character's have acted in previous books throughout all the series. Dont know, it hard to put it into words exactly about what irked me about this book, I will of course still buy the next one, I just hope the characters get their acts together.

Demon King High Demon Book 3 High Demon Series eBook Connie Suttle Reviews
Through all of these books (and especially the third one) the "hero" is simply an abused woman who has no say over who she sleeps with or what she does. If a man wants her and says he loves her then he sleeps with her.
She is no more than property and has no say in the matter.
It seems like it was written by someone raised in the kind of society where women are truly nothing but slaves.
When Reah's mother is raped they talk about how it was done to discredit the mother (because of course rape is the victim's fault).
All throughout book three, Reah is raped. She must do what Teeg says or else her good friend will be hurt or murdered. That is rape, yet she continues with the abused woman attitude and accepts it.
Every time a man abuses her in fact, it's always "her fault" and she just needs to understand. I'm waiting for more of the classic "baby, why did you make me hit you" lines.
The author's relentless abusive attitude and rape fantasies start to weigh very heavily after a while. It is difficult to read about abuse so much but really does seem to give insight into an abused mind. If you want to try and understand how an abused/raped woman thinks, then read these books but otherwise it's a difficult read.
At the same time there isn't enough character development that it really pulls you in. It's something of a dichotomy.
Note I did not finish this book, so please take this into consideration.
I had not decided whether I would continue to read this series by Connie Suttle or not, but this book tipped the scales for me and I won't be reading further.
I get the idea that the heroine of this series has been kicked around and abused by every male in her life, so I understood Reah's passive acceptance of everything that came her way, that she didn't have any choices, and that she did not expect anything to change in her life to give her choices. She was young and had no positive role models, so I didn't expect her to change into a kick-butt-and-take-names kind of girl overnight. The fact that she does change into a kick-butt high demon overnight didn't mean that she'd grow psychologically at the same time.
I drew the line in this installment, however, when the man (her husband) who betrayed her so badly in the last book kidnaps her teenaged best friend, kidnaps her, has already imprisoned a group of her friends for years, and threatens to harm all of her loved ones if she doesn't behave herself. And what does Reah do about this? She willingly sleeps with him at the first opportunity. She's not even recovered from the wounds she received at his hands, yet she accepts him gladly into her bed. You have got to be kidding me!! I threw the book down in disgust after she sleeps with Teeg, so I can't comment on the rest of the plot. I just didn't want to know how she would abase herself further.
I have to admit it, I am drawn to these books when I swear I won't buy another. Unfortunately I feel like I am rubbernecking a car accident. The sad part is I only read them hoping that maybe this time, there will be a real man who will step up and defend the female instead of just claiming how upset they are with how she is being treated and then letting it happen again and again.
I also pray for Reah or Lissa to became a real woman and stand up to all of them. Frankly, each time they put that very young girl (she started out only 17!) in danger and then justified it by saying, but it will save lives or even planets without even asking her, I want to hurl. Norian is an ass and why Lissa allows him to do the things he does to her (in the other books) and now her family, really escapes me. And I want to scream everytime some man just decides they want to be yet another mate to Reah and then forces her. It is really sad. I didnt like that Lissa ended up with 17 mates, and it looks like the same is happening to Reah. Not a single one bothered to ASK her and let her decide. And to make this girl while she is sick get up and cook for them is very much abusive. If the baby is so important then why risk it and Reah? Why start yet another alliance? And for heavens sake why have the one person I thought truly loved Reah turn out this way?? Lissa's children were surprisingly horrible. I would have thought she would have taught them better.
All in All, Ms. Suttle writes wonderfully. She really draws you into the characters. I just want something happy in these women's lives. I admit it, I want to feel good after reading a book, not sad and depressed.
